DECEMBER GIFT EXCHANGE: I want to send you some music, as a gift (two CDs of your choice, which you can keep, or re-gift to a friend), and I want you to send me a gift in exchange.
Purchase the CDs here ($3 minimum, to cover shipping), and include a message letting me know which two CDs you'd like (visit www.carsieblanton.com/music
to preview all my albums). Order by Dec. 15th to receive by Christmas.
Send your return gift to: Carsie Blanton Music, 6034 Prytania St., New Orleans, LA 70118.
Your gift to me can be money. It can also be supporting me on Patreon (www.patreon.com/carsieblanton
). But, for the month of December, I’m officially welcoming non-monetary gifts. At the bottom of this post I’ll list the sorts of gifts I’m most excited to receive, but I invite you to send me anything else that you think I’ll enjoy or make good use of.
I’m doing this because music is not a commodity, and thus is an awkward fit in the monetary economy. Songs don’t get stamped out on a conveyor belt, by a machine, all alike. I build each of my songs from the heartbreak and electricity of my actual life, which is bigger and stranger and sadder and more joyful than numbers in a ledger.
I'm also doing this because I genuinely want my music to be shared with anyone who might enjoy it. That's why I make it! I don't want money to be a barrier to my music for anybody - to my mind, that's putting the cart before the horse.
I need money to survive, yes - and that’s why I generally encourage monetary gifts in exchange for my music. But beyond survival, I am not interested in money. I’m interested in insight, and inspiration, and generosity, and stories, and magic. As e.e. cummings put it eloquently, “a poet is somebody who is obsessed by Making. my only interest in making money would be to make it. Fortunately, however, I should prefer to make almost anything else.”
So, here are some things I would prefer to make, in no particular order, at least for the month of December:
-Books, preferably novels, preferably beautifully written and literary and sad and a bit fantastical (here is a list of my favorite books: www.facebook.com/carsieblantonfans/posts/10152664954048256)
-Music, preferably on vinyl. (Most-wanted records include pre-1960 ‘classic’ jazz, 1950s/60s R&B, Delta and New Orleans blues, anything from Tom Waits, Sam Cooke, or Leonard Cohen.)
-Beautiful small objects, art pieces and good luck charms, especially creatures. I’m currently infatuated with luna moths, seahorses, badgers, and jellyfish.
-Finally, becoming a patron of my work (www.patreon.com/carsieblanton
) is a major gift in any season.
Thanks for trying out this wild experiment with me! Feel free to email me with questions: firstname.lastname@example.org.
